TECHNIQUE IS NOTHING WITHOUT CONTROL

The watchmaker from Meyrin in Switzerland has teamed up with the Italian tyre manufacturer to design two limited editions that are outrageously classy, stamped with the Poinçon de Genève and only available in Roger Dubuis boutiques.

The inauguration of the Roger Dubuis stand at the Salon International de Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) is always a big event. From the opening of the annual watchmakers’ exhibition, journalists and customers rush to see the curtain rise and catch the new surprise concocted by the Geneva manufacturer. This year, dancers dressed in auto driver suits with the Roger Dubuis and Pirelli logos and black full-face helmets were there to unveil a white space crossed by a orange-red wavy line. The crack running along the ground and mounting the wall evokes an erupting volcano or the merger of two powerful companies, each in its own area of expertise. The fruit of this union is a pair of timepieces, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli, in a limited edition.

Available in eight units, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Double Flying Tourbillon model features an impressive 47mm titanium case covered in black PVD, with the trim and crown sheathed in blue rubber. With no watch face, the mechanical heart of the timepiece is fully revealed, including a stylised black and blue star (near 12 o’clock) and a double tourbillon (at 5 and 7 o’clock). The manual wind RD105SQ calibre, providing 50 hours of power reserve, drives the hour and minute hands (in the centre) and the power reserve indicator (at 9 o’clock).

The Excalibur Spider Pirelli Automatic Skeleton version, meanwhile, features the same watch case, but is slightly smaller (45mm) and finer. Encircled by a white minute track on a blue background, and with luminous screws used for indexes, the self-winding mechanism RD820SQ calibre has a futurist look. The star typifying the Spider concept is set near 4 o’clock and extends its asymmetric points to the openwork micro-rotor at 11 o’clock. At the centre of the piece, two golden hands covered in black PVD and tipped with blue and phosphorescent arrows display the hours and minutes. This model is available in 88 pieces.

Alongside the technical mastery and aesthetic attraction that are the Roger Dubuis hallmarks, the skills of the tyre manufacturer Pirelli add a finishing touch to this pair of watches. The influence of the Italian firm can be seen in the choice of colours, and (above all), in the strap. It is made of tyre fragments taken from winning cars in 2016 auto races and is surrounded by a smooth strip decorated with blue stitching, evoking the profile of Pirelli’s famous intermediate tyres.
